2012 Quail
Motorcycle Gathering

This lovely 1961 BSA Gold Star was the highest-awarded Brit bike at this year's Quail, snagging the best European Motorcycle to 1978. Congrats to owner Gene Brown.

2012 QUAIL MOTORCYCLE GATHERING...WOW!
The Quail Motorcycle Gathering, now in its fourth year, has quickly become the premier classic motorcycle show in Northern California, and perhaps on the West Coast. Following the demise of the Legend of the Motorcycle show in Pacifica, the Quail is now THE place to be if you want to see gorgeous classic bikes in a breathtakingly-beautiful setting. The Quail Lodge Golf & Country Club is set in the Carmel Valley hills and May is the perfect time of year to be there.
This 1950 Triumph 6T (the first year for the 650 Thunderbird) got second place for European bikes to 1978. Congratulations to owner Gregory Beck.

2012 QUAIL MOTORCYCLE GATHERING
LOTS OF ACTION

The show attracted well over 100 classic, historic, competition, custom, vintage & special machines, competing in a variety of judged classes for trophies. And as usual, the price of admission included a live band, gourmet food & a live auction, held this year by Mecum Auctions, which sold off an entire private collection of rare MV Agusta motorcycles. A special area within the Quail show was reserved for the display of these luscious Italian beauties. And Giovanni Magni, son of Arturo Magni, who for two decades spearheaded MV’s racing program, was a special guest of honor, giving adoring fans a look behind the scenes at MV Agusta, and now at Magni, their own small motorcycle company, appropriately named “Magni”.

2012 QUAIL MOTORCYCLE GATHERING HOSTS VETTER
Motorcycle-designer extraordinaire Craig Vetter (father of the modern touring fairing, the ’73 Triumph Hurricane & more) sponsored the next leg in his Vetter Fuel Economy Challenge, in which a gaggle of unusual bikes compete to see who can go furthest on a gallon of fuel. This year’s winner was Fred Hayes and his diesel-powered 2011 Hayes MD690R2.

The legendary "Blue Bike", the HRD-Vincent ridden into the record books.

2012 QUAIL MOTORCYCLE GATHERING
HONORS LEGEND MARTY DICKERSON

Another special guest was Marty Dickerson and his legendary Vincent V-twin racer, nicknamed the “Blue Bike”. Marty recounted some amazing stories from the old days of racing on tracks and streets back in the late 1940s & 50s. As always, it was supremely entertaining for anyone hooked on the motorcycle habit.

Just behind this delicious Magni/BSA Rocket 3 cafe racer, were all the engraved silver trophy plates, soon to be awarded to the proud owners of the winning bikes at the show.

2012 QUAIL MOTORCYCLE GATHERING...
IT'S ALL ABOUT THE BIKES!

Then of course there were all those lovely motorcycles on display. Well over 100 bikes were on display and painstakingly judged against one another (that must be difficult with so many nice bikes). Many awards were given in numerous classes, with ‘Best of Show’ going to one of those scrumptious MV’s, a particularly nice 1974 750S, owned by Simon Graham.

2012 QUAIL MOTORCYCLE GATHERING...
WHAT A DAY!

All in all, the weather was ideal, the food & music were superb, the crowd was smiling and the bikes were stupendous. Once again, the Quail proved itself to be Northern California’s premium classic motorcycle show. Don’t miss the next one, in May of 2013. Each year just seems to get better than the last. Check out last year's show, the 2011 Quail Motorcycle Gathering. And hopefully we’ll see you there next year.

2012 QUAIL MOTORCYCLE GATHERING...
SO, LET'S SEE SOME BIKES!!!

1959 Norton Manx M40 racer. NICE!

1960 Matchless G50.

1962 Norton 650SS.

Sweet 1964 Triumph TR6 custom street tracker.

Cool 1965 BSA A65 chopper. You don't see many BSA choppers.

1966 Velocette Venom Thruxton.

This lovely 1973 Triumph T140 Bonneville cafe racer was brought to you by CaliforniaCafeRacer.com, a very active group of folks from San Luis Obispo CA. They also had a booth at the show.

This 1975 Norton 850 Commando sports the rare, 1975-only red, white, blue & gold John Player livery. Gorgeous!

This awesome Triton featured a Triumph T150 Trident triple engine and a Norton Featherbed frame. Triple Mikuni carbs, big Grimeca front brake, it was done right. And for sale too, in the bike corral. Unfortunately, I failed to check the price on it. Sorry.

Commissioned by California-based Triple Tecs, renowned BSA/Triumph triple experts, a 930cc stroker BSA Rocket 3 motor was shipped to Gionvanni Magni (see text above) to build this very special cafe racer. The frame is a copy of an MV Agusta 500 chrome moly race frame that weighs just 24 pounds. Stunning!!

And just because you expected another Brit bike, here's the wild & wooly MotoMorphic. What a monster, huh?
