600 cc Ariel single
by Howard Fitzcharles III
This is my 600cc Ariel single I purchased in a basket and put it together to ride on the street and in dirt in the early 50's. The bike came with girder front forks but I soon replaced them with these Matchless hydraulic forks. The bike came with extra parts and the lower end was the same for a 500cc OHV engine and all of the parts were there so I converted it to the 500cc version. However the 500cc piston had a crack in it so I had a local welding shop weld the crack. I didn't know enough about engines at the time and I soon burned a hole in that piston so I converted it back to the 600cc flat head and rode street and dirt for several years. This was my first British bike and I loved it.
Even with the oil leaks and constant repairs I still loved it.
