Velocette Venom

VELOCETTE VENOM BACKGROUND
Velocette never built a proper parallel twin when seemingly everyone else in the British motorcycle industry did. Instead, they relied wholly on their family of big singles, well into the 1960s. In 1955, Velocette introduced the last evolution of its robust MSS single, itself launched originally in 1935. So, they were dealing with fairly ancient engine technology. Regardless, they put the absolute best engineering might they had behind the task of introducing two new singles to do battle with 500 and 650 twins from the likes of Triumph, BSA and Norton. The new bikes came in two sizes, the 350cc Velocette Viper and the 500cc Velocette Venom. They would remain in production until the collapse of parent-company AMC (Associated Motor Cycles in 1970.
VELOCETTE VENOM PERFORMANCE CRED
Despite the huge disadvantage of having only one huge piston against an onslaught of twins, The Velocette Venom was the first motorcycle in history to cover 2,400 miles in 24 hours. Not many motorcycles were capable enough, or reliable enough to maintain an average speed of 100 MPH for 24 hours non-stop. But Velocette did it on March 18, 1961.
