Whitworth Tools

WHITWORTH TOOLS-CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT 'EM
You can't, that is, if you own an old British motorcycle. First off, because old Brit bikes always seem to need something. But secondly, because the Brits used a different sizing system than either Europe (who used the metric system) or the US (which used the American Standard System). Leave it to the Brits to have something different than the two biggest markets for their products in the world. But that was the thinking in those days. You almost can't blame them though. The Whitworth system (first for threads) was the world's first standardized thread in 1841. Until then, every shop did threads their own way. It was the pressing need for warships during the Crimean War that really prompted Britain to push for a standarized system, to aid in manufacture, but also maintenance, repair and the inventorying of parts in the field. So, the Brits were the first, but like always, they refused to let go of an old idea, if they thought of it. Funny thing though, just about the time when the rest of the world was switching over the the metric system, and even America was trying to go metric, Triumph and BSA wanted to shift out of Whitworth and had to choose a new system. They went with American. Even the Americans weren't using the American system. Oh well, leave it to the Brits. Gotta' love 'em.
