Our Ride thru Yosemite National Park 2012

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK 2012
YOSEMITE HERE WE COME!
Every year, this certain group of guys from the Bay Area gets together to ride their Harleys up to Yosemite National Park in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California. (I'm not just a Brit bike guy, I also ride a Harley.) They're an eclectic bunch, a retired cop, a retired MP, a Lineman, an active-duty motorcycle cop, and a mixed bag of other guys who love to ride. It's an invitation-only gig and 3 years ago I got invited. Then I got invited back for a second year. And now, I just got back from my third year with these guys. It's a great setup. This year we had 10 bikes total, including one riding a trailer behind our chase truck. Great to have a chase truck, for sure. Especially when you carry as much camping crap as we do! This was a week-long camp out, and that takes a lot of crap.

THE LONG WAY
After a big breakfast, we left on Sunday morning, June 17, 2012 from The Flames Restaurant in Campbell CA (near San Jose). And we weren't about to take the direct route, which would have been about a 3-hour ride. No sir, we went the long way. And it took us 9 hours to get there…9 hours of riding bliss! We headed south through Gilroy, then east along Hwy 152 through Pacheco Pass. We stopped at Casa de Fruita, then headed out into the wickedly-hot San Joaquin Valley. We took Hwy 33 to Hwy 140, country roads all the way, into Merced where we stopped at the local watering hole. Then it was on to Snelling. Next came the booming metropolis of Hornitos (Spanish for "Little Oven"), which consists of one bar, which happened to be closed. But we saw the owner puttering around out back and talked him into opening just for us. After a brief cool-down, we rode off to historic Colterville. This entire area is rich in Gold Rush folklore, and we had lunch in a Mother Lode-era hotel that was amazing. Then it was off to Yosemite.

YOSEMITE AT LAST
What I didn't mention is that one of our group was having problems with his bike, like it broke down 4 times just on the way up! Fortunately, after much ado we made it up to our accommodations at Yosemite Lakes Campgrounds, just outside the gate to the park. A very nice spot in the woods with camping sites and simple cabins (I opted for a cabin).

EAT, DRINK & BE MERRY
Of course, eating, drinking and generally having fun is a major part of these trips. We barbecued nearly every night, we made big breakfasts on the campfire, and when the sun went down, the drink started to flow. It was all in good fun, and everyone had a great time.

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE RIDE
But in the end, these trips are really about the riding. The ride up was amazing, breakdowns notwithstanding. It's all part of the adventure. I'm sure it wasn't much fun for the guy with the mechanical problems, but the rest of us enjoyed it for what it was. Then, every day for the next week, we took a ride to some amazing place or another. One day we rode through Yosemite Valley looking at waterfalls. Another took us to Hetch Hetchy Reservoir. Another day we rode to the top of Glacier Point, one of the most amazing spots on Earth, hanging 3,000 feet above the valley floor below, probably one of the world's greatest vertical drops, looking across the valley at two majestic waterfalls & Half Dome. Awesome!

SOAKING UP THE SCENERY
Along the way, we found many cool sites, and interesting places to stop. We found an old abandoned house in the woods with a horseshoe pit & a huge swing hanging from a tree towering above. We all had a hand at the swing, and played some horseshoes out in the woods. Even the smell was amazing.

EVERYTHING MUST END SOONER OR LATER
The week was full of fun and adventure, but by the following Saturday, it was time to break camp & head for home. This time we took the short route, about a 3 hour ride. We had a blast on the way home too. I peeled off at Pleasanton while the rest of the group along with the chase truck, and on it all my stuff, continued on to San Jose. I got home, parked my bike, jumped in the car & headed for San Jose. We met at a bar for a farewell toast, just what I needed. But it's all good. Got my stuff, headed for home, and slept in my own bed for the first time in a week. Rested well, too. Yosemite National Park 2012 was a blast! But, I'm already thinking about next year…
